Developmental Delay – Delay Reaching Milestones
Developmental delay is a diagnosis given to younger children who are not meeting the milestones expected for their age. We know that ‘early intervention’ is the best way for your child to catch up to where they need to be. This process of catching up takes time. By focussing on the activities that will benefit your child the most, we can build the skills they are in the process of learning, so they are ready to work on the next skill in their repertoire.
Our approach to assessing your child:
- You know your child better than anyone else. The information you give us is invaluable in working out how to best help them
- We have a very useful tool called the Alberta Infant Movement Evaluation Scale (AIMS).
- The AIMS is an observational assessment that can be done during the initial assessment
- The scale gives a percentile score for your child’s age
- With a low score we will give you guidance about ways you can assist your child, and repeat the scale to make sure the initial score was accurate
- Re-administering the AIMS after a period of time lets us see how your child is progressing
- We also assess for other issues such as muscle tone, hip integrity, and foot and head shape. We will refer on to the appropriate specialist practitioners if required.
We look forward to helping you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
